A popular 1950s classic, The Pajama Game comes from an era of lighthearted, tuneful shows which feature a sparring romance between its two leading characters, contrasted with the antics of two effective comic sidekicks, all buoyed aloft by lilting, clever songs (“Hey, There,” “Hernando’s Hideaway,” “Steam Heat,” “I’m Not At All In Love”). Set in a 1950s pajama factory, new superintendent Sid Sorokin falls for Babe Williams, the head of the grievance committee. Efficiency expert Mr. Hines tries to keep things humming, despite his own tendency to get needlessly jealous over the actions of his secretary Gladys. There are some still-pertinent issues of management and labor which give this show a bit more grit than was typical of its era, but it remains a light-hearted and highly entertaining musical comedy.
