On the Twentieth Century
This is an odd but often very entertaining show, with elements of a 1930s classic farce about theatrical egotists battling on a cross-country train trip, combined with an operetta-style musical score. The Cy Coleman - Comden & Green songs are great fun, and in addition to offering a colorful roster of unique characters, the show also dazzles us with flashbacks and show-within-a-show sequences in all sorts of crazy time periods.

Costumes
This is an extensive and imaginative costume collection designed by Elizabeth Poindexter for the American Musical Theatre of San Jose. In addition to the 1930s style wardrobe of leading lady Lily Garland, producer Oscar Jaffe, zany eccentric Letitia Primrose, and all the assorted traveling companions, On the Twentieth Century also features moments from various fictional stage productions, including one musical about Joan of Arc, one about Mary Magdalene, and one about a saucy heroine in the French revolution.
