The set for 9 to 5, designed by Robert A. Kovach, includes all set pieces and furniture necessary to depict the various offices of a large business firm in 1979 (click here for a galley of scenic design images). This includes a free-standing revolving door, stair units, file cabinets, rolling desks with attached chairs, an oversized copier machine, windows with functional Venetian blinds, coffee area, corridor with elevator (non-working), ladies room, and Franklin Hart’s office, including sofa, desk and chair, and rolling library ladder. Other locations depicted include the garage area and living room (with sofa) of Violet’s home, the kitchen of Doralee and Duane, and Franklin Hart’s bedroom (including his flying harness). In addition, the set includes a rear-projection screen, which provides a location for the Dolly Parton introductory videos provided by Music Theatre International, if one chooses to use them. This screen also facilitates the use of assorted projections which amplify and extend the show’s set designs, most notably in the show’s several fantasy sequences. Select slides (all created by Robert Kovach) are included in the rental package, but the projection equipment is not. (No slides or videos featuring the MTWichita cast are included in the rental package.)

Costumes by Shannon Smith reflect the working attire of a large corporation in 1979, reflective of the characters’ different personalities and status in the workforce. The costumes include a variety of whimsical creations for the dream sequences: Judy’s film noir fantasy, Doralee’s rodeo fantasy, and Violet’s “animated princess” fantasy. For Violet’s Act Two fantasy “One of the Boys,” her costume includes business attire that breaks away into a white sequined pants-suit with red vest, and there are ten matching men’s suits for Violet’s backup boys.

Built in 2011. Beautifully designed, critically acclaimed all-inclusive package of sets, props, costumes, and backdrops. All the designs for the characters’ costumes and for the evocative sets were inspired by the animated film, but are wholly original in execution. Package includes drops and scrims (55′ wide x 26′ high), designed for speedy transitions and somewhat flexible stage sizes. Costumes for cast of around 50, including several children. (Costumes do NOT follow Broadway designs, which required roller-blade “heelies” for underwater characters.) Set design by J Branson, and costume design by Leon Dobkowski. XANADU features a unit set designed by Robert A. Kovach with skatable platforming, a variety of 5-screen projections, and two audience boxes, each one seating 8 observers. Additional pieces include a large scrim of the nine Muses, a hard flying XANADU sign, trick phone booth (for changing Sonny’s shoes into skates), furniture for Mt. Olympus and earthbound scenes, giant 32″ Mirror Disco Ball and sixteen small ones, Pegasus and ladder. Costumes (by Tiia Torchia) were designed for a cast of 38, including 9 muses, Sonny and Danny, assorted California inhabitants, mythological creatures in Mt. Olympus (Centaur, Cyclops, Medusa, Hermes, Satyr), and flashy disco wear for entire cast. More details to follow. Columns and facades NOT self supporting (renting venue must still have fly system). Estimated prices are as follows: Full package, $13,000; sets and props only, $10,000; costumes only, $5,000. Entire show ships in 1-53′ trailer and is High School-friendly. All new for 2011! This sets/props/backdrops package ships in 3–53′ trailers. Due to the size and complexity of these pieces, the renting venue must have dock-high loading with direct or easy access to the stage area. Estimated prices are as follows: $20,000 with a $5,000 warehouse/security deposit and a $2,000 scenic royalty payment. The costumes built were for Norma Desmond, with little or no seam allowance, and will rent for $5,000 (call for more information). Some prop items were borrowed and will not be included in the property package (email msd@mtwichita.org for more info). Norma’s limousine can be rented individually for a cost of $3,000 and can only be shipped via expedited shipping through a recommended trucking agency as there is no container built for it.

The “Paramount” scrim is designed to work only with the hard piece Paramount Gate. A number of projections were also used in this show. Scenic design by J Branson, costume design by George T. Here’s what critic Bob Curtright said about the sets and costumes when he reviewed the production:

“Based on Billy Wilder’s 1950 noirish classic that pokes around in the sordid shadows right beneath Hollywood’s glamour and glitz, it’s a dark, lush, one-of-a-kind experience… The incredibly multi-layered sets by J. Branson move in and out easily and silently to create everything from a Paramount Studios sound stage to a back lot to Norma’s Spanish palazzo with soaring staircase, pipe organ and huge arched windows. David Neville’s lighting and shadows tremendously enhance the spooky old mansion while also providing unusual, dappled special effects.

And George T. Mitchell’s gorgeous costumes evoked both sleek 1950s and musty 1920s. Norma’s gowns, particularly, were a wow, telling a subtle story of their own. She appears first in mourning black (albeit with sequins), then moves up to elegant purple brocade as Joe comes into her life, then to golden orange with red trim as she blossoms with new life.”

Differences between PHANTOM versions: (an explanation by Producing Artistic Director Wayne Bryan)

Quite a few organizations are now doing the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which is now being licensed to schools, but not to professional theatres.

At MTWrentals, we have scenery for the show PHANTOM, as written by Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston. There are some similar locations between this version of the story and the Andrew Lloyd Webber version, but there are many key differences.

Similar elements:

There is an exterior shot of the Paris Opera house that could be useful.

There are several variations of the interior, onstage areas of the Paris Opera House and its corridors.

There is a lovely drop of the interior of the Opera House, as seen from onstage, looking out at the audience, and there is a chandelier that we see drop in the distance, into the auditorium. It is much smaller in scale than the one used in the Lloyd Webber version, since the chandelier dropping takes place in the distance, not over the actual audience in your theatre.

There is a dressing room for Christine, with a mirror that becomes transparent when the Phantom arrives.

There is a set representing the managers’ offices (where “Prima Donna” is sung in the ALW version).

The Phantom’s underground lair has several rows of electrically lighted candelabras which glide on, as well as a big gondola in which the Phantom and Christine travel. There is a spooky fourposter bed to place Christine in. This set is not as ornate as the location usually seen in “Music of the Night” but it would work. However, there is no pipe organ or other keyboard in this location, in this version.

Things that are missing:

There are many locations called for in the Lloyd Webber version that do not exist in this version.

The opening “Hannibal” set; the Masquerade ball, the rooftop where Raoul and Christine are overheard by the Phantom; the ornate angel in which the Phantom hides; the graveyard; the “Don Juan Triumphant” set; the gates to which Raoul is tied; etc.

There is a rich set of costumes which would generally match the needs of the ALW version, but there are no “Masquerade” costumes for the principals or the ensemble. There are no costumes for the “Hannibal” and “Don Juan Triumphant” operas.

‘Les Miserables’ a stirring finale to MTW’s season
Performers, orchestra contribute to making this musical one of Music Theatre’s finest.

Music Theatre of Wichita’s summer finale, “Les Miserables,” is a soul-stirring, goosebump-inducing spectacle that ranks with the best versions I’ve seen on Broadway or London and just may be the best production in MTW’s 37-year history.

Boublil and Schoenberg’s 1985 masterwork, based on the 1842 novel by Victor Hugo about an ill-fated student rebellion in 19th century Paris, has the grandeur and import of opera but the approachability of Broadway. You don’t just see this show, you experience it….

Director Joe Locarro and set designer Bruce Brockman have reinvented the look with a dark, moody street set that proves versatile enough to go from dusty slum to rowdy tavern to elegant wedding to even the drippy Paris sewers — all thanks to clever lighting design by David Neville, who makes good use of a blue back spotlight for individuals to define their various little spheres of influence.

We have all costumes, props, backdrops, and other select items available from our 2010 production of CURTAINS (set by J Branson, costumes by Debbie Roberts). The full costume package rents for $10,000 and ships out in four wardrobe containers. Backdrops may be rented individually or as a package.
